JRSOs Talk About the Scheme
On Tuesday 30th September, at one of this year’s presentation evenings, two ex-JRSOs from Thurnby St Luke’s school talked about what they did last year. Here’s what Charlotte and Caitlin said:
‘My name is Charlotte and this is Caitlin and we were last years St.Lukes Junior Road Safety Officers. We have got some ideas to share with you and to tell you what we did when we were road safety officers.
-There were four year 5 jrso and we decided to have a lunch time club on Mondays 12:30 to 1:00. We had ks1 for a term and then ks2 for another term, this made it easier for us to plan our activites.
-Some of the activites we did were fun worksheets, jrso website games, and each week we had a different theme such as the green cross code week.
-One of our best activites was the working display which we created outside our hall. Each week the children in our club added to it with posters, signs of danger, messages about road safety, a traffic light and a road scene which they all helped to make.
-We also did a quiz competition and gave out prizes most weeks to the best behaved and hardest workers. We also encouraged our year 5 friends to take part in the cycling proficiency and we all passed!
Also as junior road safety officers we had the chance to take part in the competition that Loraine organised. We had to design a poster that would represent the 20 years that road safety has been running and that you should only drive no faster than 20mph outside a school.
-I won the competition and we went to the Leicester city ground for a tour, we had a meal, and met some players like Andy King and we also watched the match. I took Caitlin with me, we played Southampton and we lost 2-1. We have brought some photos from the match and some pictures of road safety, which you will soon recognise.’
As well as giving everyone an insight into what they got up to last year, they also gave some really useful advice to anyone becoming an office this year. Here are some helpful ideas they had that you may find useful:
-Get some banners for your school gates by using the JRSO website,
-Share the whole school year between ks1 and ks2,
-Take photos and use them on your display,
-Make a theme for each week like do two weeks on the green cross code etc,
-Make sure you have a teacher in the room whilst you’re doing your club,
-Have enough JRSO’S to take control of the club.
What we did
-We made a display of posters, stickers, writing about the green cross code etc,
-Give out prizes for good behaviour and good work,-Give stickers out to everybody most weeks,-Have a games week.
We want to thank both Charlotte and Caitlin for all their hard work last year, and for giving such helpful advice for all those new JRSOs starting this year!
