Why not talk about Crossing the Road in an assembly? Here are some useful things to say:
CROSSING AT A ZEBRA CROSSING.
Wait on the pavement near the kerb until all the traffic has stopped before you start to cross.
After traffic has stopped from both directions, walk across on the black and white stripes.
Keep looking all round and listening in case a driver has not seen you.
Drivers need plenty of time to slow down and stop, especially in wet weather.
CROSSING WHERE THERE IS AN ISLAND IN THE ROAD
Use the Green Cross Code to cross to the island. Stop there and use the code again to cross the second half of the road. Remember to look all round and listen.
Watch out for overtaking vehicles.
If there is an island, then treat each half of the crossing as a separate crossing. Do not assume that vehicles will stop. Check that they have stopped before starting to cross.
CROSSING AT A PELICAN CROSSING
Stop at the edge of the pvement and press the button. When the green man is showing you may start to cross but always make sure the traffic has stopped. If the green man starts to flash don’t start to cross, press the button again. Never cross when the red man is showing.
When we want to cross the road there are lots of things we can use to help us arrive alive.
A zebra crossing or traffic lights.
This little poem is about something else to help you cross safely
Red means stop!
Green means go!
Wait until the green man
Starts to show!
Do not hurry
Cross with care
Look and listen
Until safely there!
Remember to use a pelican crossing to help you cross the road safely.
Roads are very dangerous places and accidents can happen very quickly so remember to think every time you go out.
