Safe Crossing

Where there is a pavement use it. If there is no pavement always walk on the right hand side facing the traffic so that you can see the vehicles approaching.
When walking with someone smaller than you always hold their hand.
When you cross a road remember to find a safe place to cross. Make sure you can see the road and traffic clearly and traffic can see you.
If you have to cross between parked cars always use the edge of the vehicles as your kerb.

Crossing the Road

First find a safe place to stop,
Then follow the Green Cross Code.

Stop before you get to the kerb and
Keep back from the edge of the road.

Look all around for traffic and listen
Making sure the road is clear.

Cars can seem a long way off
When in fact they are quite near.

When it is safe, walk across the road
And listen and look all the time.

And once you’ve reached the other side
Try to remember this rhyme.

But if there is nowhere else to cross:

Choose a place where there is a space between two cars and make sure that it is easy to get to the other side of the road.

Make sure neither car is about to move off: look for drivers in their cars, listen for engines and look for lights.

Walk to the outside edge of the cars and stop. Here you can look all round for traffic.

Use the Gren Cross Code. When it is clear, cross, still looking and listening as you go.

As always, remember to:

Arrive Alive
